Digital stamp card: why “buy 9 coffees, get the 10th free” still works
It’s the simplest loyalty program there is, and that’s why it works. How to set up a digital stamp card guests actually complete.
A digital stamp card is the phone version of the classic “every 10th coffee free” card. Guests get the rule in two seconds and always see how far they have to go.
Why a stamp card works
Every stamp is a visible step forward, and the closer the reward, the stronger the pull: someone with 8 out of 10 picks your café over the one on the corner. Stamp cards suit frequent purchases best: coffee, merienda, lunch.

The 2-free-stamps trick
Compare two cards: an 8-stamp card that starts empty and a 10-stamp card that starts with 2 free stamps. The effort is the same, 8 visits, but the second feels underway and gets abandoned less. Marketers call it the endowed progress effect, and it costs nothing.
How to set up your digital stamp card
- A reward people want that’s cheap to make: a coffee, a slice of cake, a pint.
- Stamp count based on visit frequency: 8–10 for a daily coffee; 4–6 for a parrilla people visit once a month.
- One stamp per visit with a minimum spend, not per item.
- An expiry of about six months and a nudge when one stamp is left.
The math, with coffee at 3,500 ARS and a 10-stamp card with 2 free stamps:
8
paid coffees at 3,500 ARS to complete the card
28,000 ARS
billed across those visits
≈3 %
what the reward costs: about 900 ARS in ingredients
Paper card
- Gets lost or left at home
- Easy to fake a stamp
- You don’t know who uses it
Digital card
- Lives on the phone
- Can’t be forged
- You see who returns and how often
Stamps are just one format: to compare them with points, cashback or tiers, see types of loyalty programs. And when a guest stops collecting stamps, it’s time to win them back.
How many stamps should a loyalty card have?
It depends on how often guests visit. Ideally they can finish it in one or two months: 8–10 for a café, 4–6 for a restaurant.
Do guests need to download an app?
Not necessarily: some cards work in the phone’s browser, and fewer steps means more people join.
