How to create restaurant combo meals that raise the check, not your costs
A well-built combo saves the guest a decision and leaves you more money per table. A badly built one sells more and earns less.
A good combo saves the guest a decision and is one of the simplest ways to increase your average check. But creating restaurant combo meals isn't about bundling three dishes and cutting the price: choose badly and you sell more while earning less.
How to create combo meals in 5 steps
- 01
Pick an anchor dish
Your best seller: the burger, the milanesa, coffee with medialunas.
- 02
Add high-margin sides
Drinks, fries, desserts and coffee usually cost little relative to their price: they make the combo profitable.
- 03
Set the price
10 to 20% below the sum of individual prices is usually enough. Work out the margin in pesos.
- 04
Show the savings in pesos
“You save $3,500” is instantly clear; “15% OFF” makes people do math.
- 05
Measure and rotate
If a combo doesn't sell within a month, replace it.
The math: why a combo wins even with a discount
A craft beer bar builds a “Burger + fries + pint” combo. Example numbers in ARS:
| Item | Price | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Burger | 12,500 | 4,400 |
| Fries | 4,500 | 900 |
| IPA pint | 5,500 | 1,300 |
| All separately | 22,500 | 6,600 |
| Combo | 19,000 | 6,600 |
The guest saves 3,500 ARS and you make 12,400 ARS per combo, versus 8,100 ARS for the burger alone. The discount comes out of the fries and beer, which carry a better margin. Check any promo the same way: how to tell if a promotion is profitable.
Combo ideas by type of venue
- Café: café con leche, 2 medialunas and orange juice for the afternoon merienda.
- Weekday lunch menu: dish of the day, a drink and dessert or coffee, Monday to Friday.
- Parrilla: grill platter for two, a salad and a bottle of house wine.
- Gluten-free (sin TACC): a combo of safe options only, no questions needed.
Common combo mistakes
- Discounting the low-margin item. You lose money on every sale.
- Too many options. 3 to 5 combos is enough; 15 is confusing.
- Not updating them. With every price increase, check the combo still costs less than the items separately.
- Invisible savings. If guests can't see what they save, the combo looks like just another dish.
